My Story: Getting Over My Fear of Public Speaking

Public speaking, like for most of the world is my greatest fear. I'd get nervous before choir performances. I'd even have an upset stomach the night before.

In college, I took public speaking first semester freshman year to try to get it out of the way since I dreaded it so much. I wasn't comfortable talking in front of people. In addition to getting nervous, my hands would shake and sometimes my voice. My mind and heart would race too. I generally felt like I could be sick at any moment. I was jealous of people who could talk about any subject while being carefree and engaging. Despite all the presentations I made during college, I never got comfortable with it. I always prepared, but never felt like it showed that much.

In my first job out of college, I was no better. Every time I had to speak, I was awful. Once I had to give a briefing to top military officials, my boss, and a group of 75. Despite all the practicing I'd done and the fact that I knew my topic, my voice betrayed me and made it sound like I was on the verge of crying.

When I got my current job, I ended up speaking to 17 classes, of up to 400 students at a time, in the span of two weeks. It was hard, but I didn't back away from it. From then, I vowed that any time someone asked me to speak I would do it. How else was I to get better? That doesn't mean it was easy.

Once, I hadn't left my office early enough, so I was rushing to a building up a slight hill. Once at the building, I climbed three flights of stairs. I took a deep breath, went it, was introduced and started speaking. Soon, I realized that I wasn't getting oxygen fast enough and needed to catch my breath, meanwhile I'm speaking to a class of 45 students. I wasn't sure what to do. I tried to take short breaks to suck in some air, but it wasn't enough. I was panicking. I thought about running out of the room. Finally, I made a slight joke about how I was short of breath from running up the stairs. Thankfully, the instructor started talked and let me catch my breath. Later, we laughed about it, but at the time it was mortifying.

Last fall, my job changed even more. My coworkers and I started teaching professional development topics to College of Business students. So, each week, I taught two different sessions to up to 80 students. For someone with a fear of public speaking, this was intimidating. Starting out, I always had my note sheet by my side, but now I can remember everything I want to say. This experience and presenting in my Masters classes has made me a much better, more relaxed speaker. I work to find ways to engage my audience and show them why the subject is important. I use student feedback to constantly improve on my presenting ability.

I still have a lot of room to improve, like being able to speak off the cuff on other subjects than my area of expertise. The point is that I'm improving. While, I will never be paid to go around the world and speak for a living, that doesn't mean I shouldn't work to get better at it.

Unique Bachelorette Party Ideas

I think, the key to a good bachelorette party is that it's personalized to the bride.

One of my very best friends is getting married next month. She's not a drinker, dancer, or into the club scene, so the typical bachelorette party wasn't for her. She loves fitness and giving back, so for her party we're going to run a charity 5k and then for donuts to a fun, little shop, called Varsity Donuts.

Another fun bachelorette party that I went to once was at a spa. We chose from their services. I liked that it was different and relaxing.

Other ideas...

Karaoke
Bowling
A Hike
Board Game Night
Wine Tasting
Wine & Painting

Pretty much, the sky is the limit. So, get creative. It's all about making the bride feel special and spending some quality time celebrating the next big step in her life.

My Style Icons, Jane the Virgin and Gina Rodriguez

I admit, I am addicted to the show, Jane the Virgin.
In addition to loving the show, I love the wardrobe for the lead character, Jane. The show is set in Miami, so she wears a lot of vivid colors, which I also like to do. She also wears tons of super fresh, fun dresses.

Here's a sample of some of her fun outfits

The actress who plays Jane is Gina Rodriguez and I like her clean style.

I also love Jane/Gina's hair and am trying to do mine similarly. It's so fun and flirty!

Movie #3: Gone in 60 Seconds

I recently watched the old movie, Gone in 60 Seconds. It reminded me of an old school version of the Fast and the Furious. It stars Nicholas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Robert Duvall. There are also some B and C list movie stars earlier in their careers.

The premise is that the younger brother (Kip) of a former car thief (Memphis) gets himself in trouble with some bad people. Knowing Memphis' notorious past, they draw him back into a life of stealing cars to save Kip's life. His must steal a long list of expensive cars in a VERY short time. He puts together his old team with his brother's team to form a motley crew. They've got little to no time to scout the cars they need and steal them. So, they take one night to get it all done. This was a nail biter and action packed.

Do they live or die? Watch the whole movie and find out.

Ellie Holcomb: Red Sea Road Album

I love Ellie Holcomb's music! I have been really excited for the debut of her new album, Red Sea Road. It's everything I'd hoped for and more. I listen to her album most days as I get ready for work. It helps me relax and refocuses my mind on the Lord.

I love it! Here's her first single from that album:

Here's her title track"

Each and every song speaks to me and I hope it brings peace to you, as well.

Living with an Autoimmune Disease

Living with an autoimmune disease is trying. One day you feel okay and the next every movement you make brings pain. Mostly during trying times, I fear when things will get even worse. I've been living with rheumatoid arthritis for almost 9 years. They have been some of the most challenging years of my life, but I'm still alive, so God has a purpose for my life. He also has a purpose for your life too!

We all have different ways to cope with struggles and I'd like to share what's helped me:

1. Give yourself a break
Find the balance between pushing yourself to stay active and listening to your body. This is one of my greatest challenges.
Sometimes you do need to rest. Giving your best is good enough.

2. Reach out for help and support
Even though it feels like complaining, remember to ask for help. I hate asking for help, but when people who understand my RA know I'm struggling, they are ALWAYS supportive. For people who are trying to understand your disease share with them about what you're going through. Maybe it's not that they don't care, but that they don't understand it.

3. Rest really is key
Even though, I wish I could do what everyone else can, I can't. Missing out on sleep hurts you. Your body needs time to recoup. Learn how much sleep your body requires to function properly. I need at least 8 hours.

4. Eat Healthy
Good food helps fuel your body and give you energy. Bad food makes me feel sluggish and blah. I love snacking on fruit, carrots, unsalted almonds, and banana chips (my favorite). I try to make sure I'm getting enough protein and veggies. I deal with feet swelling, so monitor my salt content VERY closely.

5. Stay active

It's better to stay active than not to. For me, it keeps my joints from getting too stiff.

My chiropractor is key to keeping my body in good working order.

I work out with very physically fit people who can do things my body can't do. They've learned that I push myself and if I say I can't do something it's not that I'm being lazy, but I'm trying to manage my health. So, I find an alternate exercise that doesn't tax a pained joint. I often feel self-conscious about things I can't do and I get sad, but I have to be honest with myself and my friends about it. I remind myself that I can do things that people with other health issues can't do and that helps my state of mind.

The key is to the do the best that you can. On days where I just don't want to work out, I remember that something is better than nothing and how much working out keeps my joints moving. Also, drink lots of water and maybe eat a small snack to give you energy for your workout.

6. Find a doctor who listens and responds promptly to communication

Don't be afraid to call and ask for meds to help with your symptoms. Ask questions. That's what they're there for. Be your own advocate.

7. Faith
For me, my faith has been such a source of strength and comfort. I pray about my joint pain and I know God hears me. I don't want my pain to be wasted, so I try to learn something from everything. Having RA has greatly increased my empathy. I ask my church, friends, and family for prayer when I need it. Knowing people are praying for me always helps my heart and health.

8. Encouragement

I find encouragement through reading my Bible, friends, family, positive quotes on Pinterest and Facebook, and prayer.

9. Talk About It

Find someone you can talk to candidly about what you're going through. Friends, family, or a therapist will do the trick. My mom knows when I need to hear things that may help the problem and is open to when I just need her to listen. We all generally know when someone really wants to know how we are or when they just want a one-word reply.

To those who also have an autoimmune disease; we're all in this together. To those that know someone with an autoimmune disease, be patient with us, pray for us, hug us, and thank you for caring!

Mattress Upgrade

After realizing that I'd been complaining of back pain from my 22+ year old mattress for over 1.5 years, I decided I had to look into getting a new one.

So, the search began. I went with a trusted friend. We started at Faith Furniture as they had a sale. The mattress in my price range just wasn't the right one. Stop #2 was the Sears Homestore. They had two mattresses, but no pricing. The guy seemed bothered to have to look up pricing. He was gone forever. I was happy to leave there. They had the worst customer service.

Next stop was Feldkamp's Furniture. There, we encountered the most inexpressive sales guy. There I found the mattress of my dreams, but it was not within my budget. The dream mattress was a Dr. Greene's mattress. Dr. Greene is an orthopedic surgeon and this was the first mattress that supported my low back. My low back was my problem area. I unfortunately couldn't get that mattress.

From there, we went to Mattress Firm. Though I'd heard good things about it, the prices were exorbitant. Off to the next place. By this point, I was still stuck on the Dr. Greene's mattress, but couldn't make it work with my budget. :(

Then I found a great deal on a mattress at Beds for Less, but it still wasn't the one I wanted.

So, I went home and did some research. I found that another store in Manhattan, Kansas, where I live, had the mattress. So, I went to Mattress Hub. I asked if they had the Dr. Greene's mattress and they said they did, but under another name. I tried it and it was indeed the same as Dr. Greene's and thankfully at a much more affordable price with interest-free financing!!! So, I got a Somerton Plush Mattress made at the Serta plant.

Ever since I got that mattress my low back pain has gone away and I sleep so well. I should've gotten that mattress a long time ago. :)
